IMC is working with MER to design and implement activities directly related to creating greater access to education for disadvantaged communities through:

  • Support of school inspectorates in developing strategies for improving access to education
  • Developing and delivering training programmes for: inspectors to develop their capacity to support and monitor improvement of access to education; Teachers already teaching in schools from communities with a significant number of disadvantaged pupils; Members of communities to become teachers for primary education in an open education system within accredited teacher training colleges; Members of communities to become school mediators within Teacher Training Houses or other educational institutions
  • Development of a school based curriculum for second chance vocational education
  • Development of teaching materials for teaching pupils and students in pre-school, primary, after school and second chance education
  • Development of training programmes for disadvantaged communities to facilitate participation in the development of educational provision
  • Liaison with the National Centre for Vocational Education and Training on the development of second chance education facilities
  • Community capacity building and consultation training to facilitate direct involvement of local community and local authorities in educational project implementation
  • Development of open distance learning projects
  • Procurement of Euros 1.2M educational equipment.

The programme is running in 10 counties selected through competition and is linked to a grant scheme run under a separate project, which will enhance and upgrade existing vocational educational facilities.
