White Young Green (WYG) Environmental has the dedicated ecological skills and experience to undertake surveys for all bat species where development work may impinge on habitats where any of these species could potentially occur.

Sites that could potentially support a bat roost include road and rail bridges, buildings, mature and veteran trees, underground storage facilities and caves.  These can be located in urban, industrial or rural areas.

All British bat species are fully protected under Section 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981 (as amended) and under the Conservation (Natural Habitats etc) Regulations, 1994.  The Countryside and Rights of Way Act, 2000 has recently amended the 1981 Act, strengthening the protection afforded to bats. It is therefore an offence to intentionally take, kill or injure an individual bat.  Furthermore, it is an offence to intentionally or recklessly disturb, obstruct access, damage or destroy a place of shelter (e.g. a roost site) or a bat occupying such a site.

In more detail our capabilities include:

  1. Detailed surveys that enable bat species and their habitats to be identified.  These surveys can include daytime site assessments identifying potential roost sites, which can be followed up by a night time roost emergent survey to identify species using a bat detector.
  2. Mitigation Design and Implementation techniques that include:
  • Incorporation of special bat bricks within the structure of a bridge or building;
  • Erection of bat boxes to replace lost crevices and holes in trees;
  • Provision of roost habitat in loft spaces.
