Work to begin on €2.4m wastewater treatment plant in Kilmallock - 4/7/2012
WYG is gearing up for construction to begin this month on a €2.4m project to improve water quality of the River Loobagh and allow the town of Kilmallock to develop and expand.
Working on behalf of Limerick County Council, WYG, a multi-disciplinary consultancy with over 100 years’ experience in the wastewater industry, will be supervising the construction of new wastewater treatment plant, which will cater for a population of 2500 more than the existing plant.
WYG has been working with the Council for the past seven years on the proposed treatment plant which is situated northwest of the town, on the southern bank of the River Loobagh, and covers an area of approximately two acres. The award-winning consultancy has helped secure planning, provided the preliminary designs, prepared contract documents and taken the project through public procurement.
Kieran Thornton, Director, WYG said: “Built in the 1940s, the existing wastewater treatment plant caters for a population equivalent of 1500. Due to the growth of population over the years the plant is heavily overloaded and effluent discharges are a significant source of pollution of the River Loobagh.
“The new plant will allow the town to continue to develop and expand and protect the water quality in the river – helping the Council meet the conditions of its wastewater discharge licence from the Environmental Protection Agency.
“We are delighted to be supporting Limerick County Council on this next project milestone and look forward to being able to hand over the completed plant next summer. WYG is also working with Council to deliver other important infrastructural projects in the County.”
The new plant, which forms part of the Council’s wider Sewerage Scheme for Kilmallock, will be completed in two phases. Phase one will cater for a population of 4,000 (up to year 2026) and phase two allows for further expansion up to 2046 of a population of 8,000.
