Aintree Rehabilitation Centre - 20/5/2003

WYG has been appointed as structural engineer in the construction of a new £7.5 million rehabilitation centre at Aintree Hospital in Liverpool. The structure, which is being built under a design and built contract, will provide a regional centre for dialysis and limb rehabilitation and is to be constructed adjacent to an existing ward that is to remain in use throughout the project.

The structure comprises a steel frame designed within the confines of the Employers requirement, placing strict limits on deflections, vibrations, etc. due to the sensitive nature of the equipment to be used in the facility. It will be clad by a combination of outer leaf facing block and cladding at high level, with the inner leaf comprising a proprietary metal stud framework, reducing the wet trade within the building, assisting in infection control. Two large plant rooms are provided at high level.

The structure is located on a flood plain to the adjacent Fazackerly Brook, thus requiring the structure to be piled with a suspended ground floor slab. The piling was carried out using continuous helical displacement piles, a new system, which is both quieter and produces less spoil than conventional CFA piles.

WYG has also undertaken the drainage design at the site requiring incorporation of the existing drainage from adjacent buildings. This has also been made more difficult by the limitation of surface water discharge to the flood sensitive brook, requiring the provision of an attenuation tank to limit discharges to the watercourse.
