Local Environmental Quality (LEQ) remains a high priority for councils, councillors and residents, despite the ending of the requirement to conduct and report the cleanliness national indicator NI195: local authorities must still keep ‘relevant land’ clear of litter and refuse and the public still uses standards of street cleansing to judge how well an area is being managed. With ever increasing pressure on local authority budgets, assessing the standards of cleanliness achieved is key to justifying expenditure in this important area, whether on in-house or contracted-out services.
With that in mind, more and more local authorities are turning to WYG for a range of street quality surveys that can bring benefit to the authority through better targeting of street maintenance resources, and achieving best value for money.

LEQ Survey Training Services:
“The East Sussex partnership and our contractor, Kier Services Ltd, jointly commissioned WYG as independent experts to conduct street monitoring surveys. Regular surveys conducted throughout the year offer the partnership a comprehensive view of the cleansing standards being achieved through our contract. These surveys are an essential element of our monitoring regime. WYG brings a level of professional expertise that has reassured all concerned that surveys are conducted fairly and produce an accurate record of actual cleansing performance.”
Madeleine Gorman, East Sussex Joint Waste, Partnership Manager
“The LEQ baseline survey carried out by WYG was very comprehensive and highlighted areas for improvement for the borough. The survey was a useful tool to help shape our contract documentation and to share with bidders during our ongoing procurement process.”
James Duggin, Contracts Manager, Rushmoor Borough Council
