Glyn Utting is a Special Projects Manager within our Management Services team. He has been with WYG for 8 years where he joined as a graduate from the University of Leeds. Here he talks about his passion for travelling and experiencing different cultures and how the projects he works on can really make a difference to those communities involved.
What did you study? Masters in Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Leeds.
What attracted you to study this? I’ve always enjoyed how structures are built and engineered. I suppose this started from a young age and building things with Lego!
What is your specialist area? Project Management, particularly construction delivery in fragile and conflict affected states environments.
What attracted you to this field of expertise? I’m always interested in travelling and immersing myself in other cultures.
What are you most passionate about in this field? Working with local communities to deliver something that can make a difference to their lives. Whether that’s a large military academy in Afghanistan or a small health post in rural Nepal.
Why is this important to you? It gives a sense of purpose to what I do. Seeing the end user satisfied with the end product is the main goal. It can be very easy to lose sight of this project goal and often cost and programme management dominate.
How does your work make a positive impact? I am fortunate in that working at the delivery end I get to see and meet with the beneficiaries of WYG’s work. For example, the building of a school in the rural Himalayas I can directly see the opportunities this opens up for the next generation of local children.
What projects are you most proud of? Camp Qargha, Afghanistan Military Academy in Kabul.
Where would you like to see your specialism take you in the future? I would like to take my current humanitarian work and expand WYG’s role in assisting future natural disaster recovery / rebuild projects.
How does WYG support you to develop your knowledge and interests? Over the last 4 years I have had opportunities and training to travel around the world to work on some very interesting and high profile projects.
