Multi-skilled consultant, WYG, has been appointed by Laing O’Rourke Construction to carry out ground investigation works for the £100 million fast-tracked redevelopment of WestCumberlandHospital, near Whitehaven.
The redevelopment of the Hensingham site will be the biggest single investment into healthcare for West Cumbria in over half-a-century. According to North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, the scheme will create a new healthcare facility that will deliver hospital care into the 21st Century using state-of-the-art low carbon technologies, ensuring it will be environmentally sustainable into the future.
By using experienced supervisory staff and operatives and maintaining close liaison with the client’s team and representatives from the Trust, WYG has been able to adapt its site activities to the changing requirements of the client’s designers, while ensuring that normal hospital operations are not interrupted or disrupted.
David Crichton-Miller, Managing Director, WYG Environment Planning Transport said: “As an international consultant, we are delighted to be involved on such a prestigious healthcare project. The project team’s site activities are taking place whilst the very busy hospital is operating as normal - so minimising the impact of our works to hospital users is vital.”
Given the fast-track programme for the redevelopment, WYG is maintaining close contact with the designers, to ensure that information about the site’s ground conditions is made available at an early stage.
The ground investigation works will be completed in early 2010, with the main building works due to start in April 2010.
