This new UK Government directive requires all large commercial companies to comply by undertaking mandatory energy efficiency and energy use assessments in line with the first compliance date - 5th December 2015.
Large companies are defined as employing over 250 people, or having a turnover in excess of €50m and balance sheet exceeding €43m. The definition could also affect organisations that don’t ordinarily recognise themselves as traditional commercial companies such as not-for-profit bodies.
Act now in order to comply with the December 2015 deadline. Compliance requires 12 month energy analysis and energy efficiency improvements signed off by a Board Director prior to notifying the Environment Agency (the scheme administrators). There is a further requirement to repeat the exercise at least once every 4 years.

The good news is that companies currently considering implementing ISO 50001 do not need to undertake an ESOS assessment, as ISO compliance is considered to be a higher level accreditation.
