60 hectares of Greenfield land situated on the eastern edge of Horndean in Hampshire have been identified as an allocation for strategic development in the emerging East Hampshire Allocations Plan. This comes as a result of a proactive engagement campaign with local residents by lead consultant WYG throughout the application process. The firm also provided technical work related to the development proposal such as masterplanning, landscape design, transport, ecology, minerals, and environment impact assessment.
Working with the District Council, Parish Council, and other members of the local community, WYG used a collaborative approach to develop a comprehensive and sustainable development proposal. Known as “Land East of Horndean”, the plan comprises approximately 700 dwellings, a retirement care village and 1.7 ha of employment land together with a new local centre incorporating a new community building.
Not only does the submitted plan address local housing and employment requirements, it also delivers key facilities, such as local retail, a primary school, and playing pitches.
The collaborative approach was instrumental in getting approval from the local community and achieving an allocation for the site. The initial consultation was attended by approximately 500 residents with 80 percent of attendees expressing their support for the scheme. The second consultation gathered 200 people offering a similar high level of support.
Martin Hawthorne, Planning Director, WYG, comments: “Through our multidisciplinary approach, we are always keen to develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders and decision makers. The allocation of ‘Land East of Horndean’ demonstrates that commercially viable development can be delivered on Greenfield sites through proactive community engagement. We are grateful to the local residents and authorities for their input and support.”
WYG offers a unique breadth of in-house expertise and consultancy services, which spans seven core disciplines and enables a thoroughly integrated approach to most projects.
