We congratulate our Cardiff colleague, Mary O'Connor, Associate Director, Urban Landscape & Design, on being elected Fellow of the Landscape Institute.
After beginning her career practicing in Ireland, north and south, Mary came to Cardiff in the mid-1990s and joined WYG in 2005. Over the last two decades, Mary has specialised in landscape planning, landscape and visual impact assessment and expert witness at public inquiries.
She plays an active role in the Landscape Institute, and was Honorary Secretary when the Royal Charter was first granted – a contribution to the profession of which she is particularly proud. She is currently their representative on the National Grid’s Stakeholder Advisory Group for their Visual Impact Provision, aimed at mitigating adverse effects of their infrastructure on National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Mary is also a member of the Advisory Panel for the third edition of the Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, having previously contributed to the second edition, and gives talks and presentations on various aspects of landscape architecture. She is currently delivering training events with Professor Carys Swanwick on landscape and visual impact assessment.
When asked what being elected to Fellowship meant to her, Mary commented “the approval of my peers is particularly satisfying and the recognition of achievement expressed on the certificate made me feel very proud”.
