WYG has become the first consultancy to become an approved provider of ‘Asbestos in Soils Awareness’ training, following verification by the UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA).
Asbestos in soil is a major health issue affecting the redevelopment of many brownfield sites in the UK. The Control of Asbestos Regulations place a duty of care on employers under Regulation 10 with respect to the provision of information, instruction and training of employees and /or sub-contractors who are working on premises where asbestos may be present.
WYG’s new ‘Asbestos in Soils Awareness’ course will help companies meet the regulation’s requirements. It is aimed at helping groundworkers and site staff plan for and avoid disturbance of asbestos in soil on site.
WYG’s asbestos and geo-environmental consultancy team is delivering the course through the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA), complementing its existing ‘asbestos awareness’ training. WYG can also tailor training to clients’ needs and deliver it where needed - tutors are currently delivering ‘Asbestos in Soils Awareness’ training to site crews working on the WYG HS2 works.
The course has been developed by UKATA approved tutor and WYG asbestos consultancy Quality Manager Jonathan Ford and WYG remediation specialist Dr Cecilia MacLeod. Jonathan was also part of the UKATA working group which developed the course syllabus. WYG’s training is regularly audited by UKATA and its asbestos and geo-environmental consultancy teams have extensive and practical experience in helping clients manage the risks associated with hazardous materials such as asbestos.
The team has worked with UKATA and CIRIA to develop the course which both addresses the requirements of Regulation 10 and draws upon the good practice in CIRIA’s C733 ‘Asbestos in soil and made ground: a guide to understanding and managing risks’ and C765 ‘Asbestos in Soil and Made Ground Good Practice Site Guide’ guidance documents and the CL:AIRE JIWG guidance document CARSoil.
The ‘Asbestos in Soils Awareness’ training is a 1 day course and covers:
WYG has also developed, with CIRIA, a ‘Training for non-licensed work for asbestos in the ground’ course to provide a higher level of training, and is developing an annual refresher course.
