We are very pleased to announce that WYG was among the winners at the Brownfield Briefing Awards 2017, held at the at The Grange Tower Hill Hotel in London on 28th September.
We won the “Best re-use of materials on a project” category for our remediation and enabling works on Leeds College of Art (now Leeds Arts University), in collaboration with the remediation contractor, Sanctus Ltd.
Patricia Gill, Geo-Environment Director at WYG, received the award, alongside Shaun Tolfree, Project Director at Sanctus.
Patricia commented: “This was a challenging project with a very tight programme of paramount importance to the client that was successfully completed as a result of rapid responses and trust across the project team. We are thrilled to have won a Brownfield Briefing Award for it.”
The project involved construction of a new teaching block within Leeds College of Art. Enabling works were needed to remove sub-surface structures after geo-environmental assessment identified a former school on the site, built in 1908 and demolished in 1978. Several tonnes of highly degraded asbestos had to be unearthed.
Of all the material used, 97.4% was re-used on site and 99.9% was recycled in total. Recycling was integral to the options appraisal, sustainability, cost assessment, and remediation strategy developed by WYG.
Below is a measure of the breakdown of the project material re-use:
• 8,035m3 of material was excavated and broken out;
• 120m3 of tarmacadam was taken off-site for re-use;
• 10m3 of excess oversized concrete was taken off-site for re-use elsewhere;
• 70m3 of topsoil was taken off-site for re-use;
• 9.7 tonnes of asbestos contaminated waste was disposed of; only 0.1% of soils was disposed of at landfill (10m3).
The maximisation of re-use of material on site saved around 1,850 lorry movements against a disposal and import option which would have been particularly difficult and unsustainable given the city centre location.
