In preparation of next week's national ‘Visit our Schools and Colleges’ campaign, engineering guru, Simon Thurlow, has inspired pupils at Woodkirk High Specialist Science School in Leeds as he provided an insight into life as an engineer.
The aim of the Visit Schools and Colleges Campaign, which is organised by Education Leeds EBP, is to encourage partnership working between schools, colleges and businesses. These partnerships will in turn create a richer learning environment, motivate young people and help them to achieve their full potential.
Simon gave 18 pupils, who are studying for an engineering diploma, a glimpse into his role at global infrastructure and advisory services specialist, WYG.
Leeds-based Simon is a structural engineer for WYG, and has over 24 years experience in the field and has worked on over 50 projects. Since his visit yesterday, Simon said: “It has been great that we, as a leading award-winning business, are able to be apart of such a worthy campaign and provide the young people of today with the foundations for their future.
“It has been great to look back at what made me want to become an engineer and to inspire the next generation of engineers. They really got enthused when I talked through some of the projects I have worked on.”
The students aged between 14 and 15 years got to hear about how Simon became an engineer and found out further what work they, as engineers, could expect to be involved in, as Simon talked about the different projects he has worked on.
Virginia Stokeley, Director of Specialist School, Woodkirk High Specialist Science School said: “Our students really enjoyed talking to Simon about the real world of work and the possibilities for the engineers of the future. They and the school are very grateful to WYG for giving Simon’s expertise and time to help encourage and inform them as they take their first steps towards worthwhile and rewarding careers.”
Recently in his role at WYG Simon has worked on several projects such as, Kingshurst Academy in Solihull, Fife Hospital PFI, The Reginald Centre in Leeds and the Environmental Energy Technology Centre near Rotherham.
