WYG has helped Sainsbury’s and Aviva to kick-start the regeneration of Redhill town centre, with proposals for a multi-million pound mixed-use redevelopment being unanimously approved by Reigate Banstead Borough Council.
Submitted by WYG, the proposals comprise an 80,000sqft town centre Sainsbury’s foodstore, a 98-room hotel, gym and significant further investment into the town centre by improving facilities and public space at the local Harlequin Theatre and Redhill Library.
As part of the Sainsbury’s redevelopment approximately 350 new full and part-time jobs will be created with additional jobs delivered as part of the new hotel and gym.
Gary Morris, Regional Director of Planning & Design, WYG said: “The proposal will deliver a high quality mixed use scheme on a key gateway site in Redhill town centre, it’s a great example of sustainable economic development and should give a big boost to regeneration in Redhill.
“The approval follows extensive discussions and negotiations between the joint applicants, Sainsbury’s and Aviva, the local authority and councillors to deliver a scheme that would play a central role in delivering the Council’s vision for regenerating Redhill town centre.”
The new flagship Sainsbury’s store, a replacement of a 1980’s supermarket, will provide increased choice for local residents, attracting shoppers to Redhill who currently have to travel outside of the town for their food shopping. It’s location in the heart of Redhill town centre will encourage linked trips to other town centre retailers.
The hotel and gym will deliver much needed facilities for Redhill town centre, increasing its draw to shoppers, visitors and businesses.
Andrew Pepler, Regional Town Planning Manager, Sainsbury's said: “We are delighted to be working with Aviva Investors to deliver this regeneration project in Redhill town centre. The new store is a significant investment for Sainsbury's and I am pleased that our customers will soon have much greater shopping choice, in a modern and attractive environment.”
