The £300m Pinderfields and Pontefract hospitals scheme has won Project of the Year at the Yorkshire & Humber Construction Best Practice awards dinner held at Aspire, Leeds.
The award was presented to global infrastructure and advisory services specialist, WYG, in collaboration with Balfour Beatty, before a packed audience of leading players in the region's construction industry.
WYG provided civil and structural design services as well as some transportation and geo-environmental work over the six year life of the project. The scheme consists of the build of two brand new state-of-the-art hospitals in Wakefield and Pontefract housing a range of outpatient and inpatient services, some specialist services and modern new rehabilitation facilities.
Mike Kershaw, Director of Buildings & Infrastructure, WYG said: “The redevelopment of Pinderfields and Pontefract represented a major and complex project and it is a great achievement for the whole Project Team for their work to be recognised.
“The project was undertaken as a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) with Consort Healthcare (Mid Yorkshire) acting as the Public Private Partnership Company (PPP), Consort Healthcare (Mid Yorkshire) being a partnership between Balfour Beatty and Royal Bank Project Investments Ltd.”
The project was shortlisted for three awards; Integration & Collaborative Working, Legacy Award – Sustainability and Project of the Year.
Mike continued: “WYG has designed several major Acute Hospitals for Balfour Beatty and this one had its own challenges to which a great deal of added value has been brought with the overall results and benefit for the Trust and the users of the buildings.”
The awards recognise best practice amongst the region’s construction businesses with the winners going on to the National Constructing Excellence Awards in London.
