The Management Services Division of WYG, consultant to the built, natural and social environment, has recently completed the total refurbishment of a 4 storey prison accommodation block at Wandsworth Prison, South London.
Appointed under a strategic framework agreement with The Ministry of Justice Custodial Property, WYG acted as client representative to oversee the entire project, which includes a ‘first night’ facility, as well as a ‘detox’ and a ‘care and separation’ unit.
In accordance with Health and Safety Regulations, the hazard of asbestos was removed throughout and an environmental clean was carried out on vermin infested roof voids. To ensure the durability and security of the block, a new roof covering and structure was fitted and all mechanical and engineering services were replaced. This included the replacement of associated alarms, new secure windows and cell doors. New warm air heating was installed as well as in-cell electrics. This was done to current prison standards.
To contribute towards the day to day running of the prison, a new bridge was built linking level 3 to the adjacent health care centre. An astro turfed, flood-lit, multi sports pitch, designed to a five a-side standard was also incorporated in the design within the existing E wing exercise yard.
The works commenced in May 2006 and is to be handed over at the end of March and fully completed by June 2008.
