WYG Engineering is leading a Derwentside development to the pinnacle of environmental sustainability.
Work is currently underway on Derwentside District Council’s new £6.8 million business centre in Tanfield Lea. When completed early next year, the centre will provide business incubation units for more than 30 new businesses – securing up to 200 jobs for the area.
Experts from WYG’s offices in Newcastle and Teesside have been involved with the development from the outset, ensuring that the finished building meets the standard for a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating – a high rating on the international measure of building sustainability.
Key features include a solar hot water heating system to generate domestic hot water by utilising the sun’s energy and a natural ventilation system to help cool the occupants during periods of warm weather. Photovoltaic cells will generate electricity from the sun’s energy while recyclable materials and reclaimed stone have been used in the construction of the building.
Work is advancing to schedule and the business centre is expected to open in March 2009.
