Have your say on new proposals for accommodation for settled gypsies and travellers on Land at Lower Hollow Copse, Copthorne.
Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC), together with the current site owner, have prepared a new scheme for public and private gypsy and traveller accommodation on land at Lower Hollow Copse, Copthorne.
WYG are now seeking the views of local people on these new proposals, on behalf of MSDC and the current site owner.
The Gypsy and Traveller accommodation would be situated on the south west side of the A264/A2220 roundabout, accessed from the southern side of Copthorne Road near to its junction with Old Hollow.
The proposed site location plan is available to download below and includes the location of the proposed footpath to Copthorne Village:
MSDC needs to provide 23 gypsy and traveller pitches as set out in the Mid Sussex District Plan policy DP33 'Gypsies, Travellers, and Travelling Showpeople.' Assessment of need and site search is set out within the documents under Development Plan Documents section in the Traveller Sites Allocation Document
Government policy set out in Planning Policy for Traveller Sites (PPTS) advises that the need can be met by both public and private provision on appropriate sites.
The proposed accommodation at Lower Hollow Copse would help to provide some of the current unmet need for permanent pitches for settled gypsies and travellers identified in the policy.
This scheme revises the previous withdrawn application, having fewer pitches resulting in a less dense site and improved provision of public and private amenity space. A comparison drawing showing the site layouts of the previous 13 pitch scheme and the current 8 pitch proposal is available to download here:
The proposed site layout is available to download below.
Additional drawings are also available to download below. These show the appearance of the small number of permanent buildings on the site – five small utility blocks and a site manager's office. They also show the proposed boundary treatments (including the acoustic fence) around and within the site. The photomontage shows an illustrative view of the proposed development through the new access from Copthorne Road into the site with the acoustic fence and landscaping. The landscape drawing shows the landscape proposals for the whole site layout.
The new scheme proposes 8 pitches, for use by gypsies and travellers only, and includes:
