What is your role at WYG and how long have you been in post?
I'm an Associate Director within WYG's urban design department and head up the southern team, based at our Southampton office. I’ve been with WYG for almost a year and have been busy with a range of public and private sector clients and projects. The team has doubled in size and continues to grow!
What do you enjoy most about working at WYG?
I enjoy the multi-disciplinary nature of the company, it’s great to be able to work alongside and engage with colleagues from different teams every day. From a design perspective, this collaborative approach means we can provide both attractive and technically considered design solutions to our clients.
In addition, I really enjoy the company culture and flexible working environment WYG promote, they encourage a good work life balance and make each office an enjoyable place to work.
What key projects have you been involved in and what was your role?
Given the southern team is only a year old there have already been lots. One key project that stands out is Knowle Water Meadows, which was a community led site promotion and outline application for 200 new homes. The scheme included a multi-functional open space at its heart containing a natural play area built into the landscape.
What interests you about Urban Design?
I have always been interested in design, architecture and the built environment. I initially trained as a planner and although interesting, I always knew I wanted to be involved in design. Luckily, many years ago, I fell into Urban Design following a successful period of work experience and never looked back. I love how urban design sets the tone for development and regeneration. As urban designers we create design concepts and principles that will ultimately shape how new communities look and feel. In addition to this I get a kick out of seeing my schemes built, it’s a lovely feeling to drive past developments you have designed and see the places in reality!
What are your specific areas of expertise?
Throughout my career I have led projects for both public and private sector clients and have experience of working for a number of national house builders taking projects through to delivery. I specialise in residential masterplanning, design coding and the preparation of proving layouts for developer clients.
Are there any aspirational projects/roles you would like to be involved in in the future?
As a fairly new team we are looking to grow our portfolio. Our bread and butter is residential masterplanning for developer clients although in the future we intend to grow our public sector and international experience to offer the full range of urban design consultancy services. A company like WYG is a great place to be able to do this and I am looking forward to the years ahead and growth of the southern urban design team.
