We undertook this complex regeneration project, where the design solution involved rethinking the role and purpose of the town centre, in the context of a very challenging retail environment Bringing together the Council, local businesses, community groups and charities our team helped focus attention on the numerous challenges facing the area.
New economic uses and more residents were key parts of the solution. The plan covered numerous projects and interventions setting an ambitious but realistic agenda for change.
Our masterplan helped promote and align public and private sector investment and the town centre is already seeing major benefit from our work focussing attention on a series of key projects and activities.
The catalyst development project was a new leisure destination at Forge Island site in the heart of the town. The Council have since acquired this site and have now selected their developer partner. A planning application for cinema, bars, restaurants, a new hotel and over 150 apartments is expected in spring 2019.
The success of this commission is measured by activity on the ground and the investment the masterplan has helped align and unlock. Close working with our client was essential throughout and helped support trust and political buy-in for the proposals.
