As transport consultants on two of the UK’s most successful real time passenger information (RTPI) and fleet management systems, we have had a significant impact on the quality and availability of live bus information across south-east Scotland.
The City of Edinburgh & Lothian Buses ‘bustracker’ system provides accurate live bus information across the entire Lothian Buses network, covering 730 buses and over 2000 stops. It is now an everyday part of bus travel in and around Edinburgh with live information available on 450 street signs and over 12 million queries per month made through web, mobile and app services.
Building on bustracker’s success, we partnered with SEStran (South East Scotland Transport Partnership) to deliver live bus information across the region. This ambitious project provides full-fleet coverage for First and Stagecoach buses with plans to expand to include smaller bus operators. The system currently serves 28% of Scotland’s population, operating across 3,000 square miles and 8 local authority areas. Through our contribution to successful funding applications, SEStran also secured £4m from ERDF and Transport Scotland to support the project.
Live bus information is now provided through SEStran’s on-street signs, web, mobile and app services and is also available via bespoke interfaces with Edinburgh’s 450 bustracker signs and TravelineScotland’s information service. Our experts were also able to add value to the project by developing an innovative digital signing strategy to deliver information on mixed content screens in both public and private off-network locations.
Fleet Management & RTPI
Fleet management and RTPI commissions are a complex blend of technology, efficient administration and stakeholder relations. We were involved in both projects from feasibility studies to partnership building, system specification and tender appraisal, project management, testing and commissioning. Our approach ensured reliable, relevant and high quality technical and administrative solutions that met the needs of all users - from the board room to the maintenance depot.
The BustrackerSEStran project was named “Local Authority Bus Project of the Year- 2014” in the prestigious UK Bus Awards, in recognition of the scale of the initiative and the constructive partnerships through which it was achieved.
