Working as sub-consultant to Mott Macdonald, we were instructed to provide strategic planning advice for the Birmingham City Centre Extension (BCCE) of the Midland Metro.
The fact that the existing line did not reach the city centre had been identified as a restricting factor on usage of the system. The proposed scheme aims to provide a high quality, reliable light rail system that serves key destinations and civic spaces in the heart of the city.
We also acted as planning agents for the discharge of conditions prior to commencement of works. As part of this we undertook consultation with a range of stakeholders and detailed information was submitted in respect of tram stop design and external appearance to ensure they successfully integrate with the surrounding cityscape.
The first phase of development involves the area around Snow Hill Station, the focus of one of the city's major new commercial districts, with subsequent extensions seeing trams returning to the city centre for the first time in 60 years.
